Visit Lazy Dog cottage and explore Frome On the border of Wiltshire and Somerset, Frome is a pretty historic market town with steep winding streets and a relaxed atmosphere. It dates back to 685 AD and was at its height as a centre of the wool industry in the 1500-1700s. Fortunately it retains much of the architecture of its heyday and is home to more listed buildings than any other town of its size in England. In addition it has a surprising range of amenities for a town of its size; 2 theatres, a live venue (www.cheeseandgrain.co.uk), a cinema, museum, arts centre and leisure centre as well as excellent shopping in town and on Catherine Hill. Frome is still a thriving market town with open air markets every Wednesday and Saturday, and a variety of indoor markets at the Cheese and Grain Hall. Use Lazy Dog as a base for exploring the Mendips, Somerset, Wiltshire, or Bath The countryside around Frome is stunning and scattered with attractive villages and hamlets. This makes it an excellent area for walkers or those wanting to explore by car or bike. To the west are the Mendip Hills. To the south are the Longleat estate and Stourhead house with its famous gardens. The beautiful city of Bath is 13 miles north and is easily accessible by car or train. There you can visit the Roman baths Abbey, museums or just shop ‘til you drop. 25 miles to the east is the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge. You’ll find full details of all these attractions and many more along with maps and local guide books at the cottage. The beauty of all the above is that with the exception of the safari park at Longleat and the house at Stourhead they are open all year round. Whether your interests are architectural, historical, horticultural, scenic or retail you won’t be short of something to do whatever time of year you visit.
